Episode: The Process of Transformation — Understanding Sanctification

When we accept Christ, we know we are saved by grace. But what happens next? Why do we still face difficult trials, heavy burdens, and unexpected storms even after giving our lives to God?

In this episode of Touching Hearts and Changing Lives, Pastor Holmes of Crystal Fountain Missionary Baptist Church unpacks a vital, yet frequently misunderstood leg of the Christian walk: Sanctification.

While salvation happens in an instant and glorification awaits us in eternity, sanctification is the lifelong, continuous journey of being transformed into the image of Jesus Christ. Pastor Holmes challenges believers to stop relying on exhausting self-effort and instead yield to the Holy Spirit. Discover how the trials you are experiencing aren't necessarily a spiritual attack—they might just be God's tools to root out uncleanliness, break your self-reliance, and shape you into a vessel of honor.

Tune in to learn how to live more, worry less, and embrace the beautiful, purifying process of becoming more like Jesus through these key foundational Scriptures:

  • The Work of the Spirit: Dive into the opening text of 1 Peter 1 to see how we are chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father through the sanctification of the Spirit unto obedience.

  • The Divine Blueprint: Examine Romans 8 to understand God’s ultimate will for your life—that every believer is predestined to be conformed directly into the image of His Son.

  • The Judgment Seat of Christ: Look closely at 1 Corinthians 3 to understand the Bema seat judgment, where our post-salvation works will be tried by fire. Will your life's work be wood, hay, and stubble that burns away, or gold, silver, and precious stones that shine brighter?

  • Becoming a Vessel of Honor: Unpack the instructions in 2 Timothy 2 on how to purge yourself from worldly dishonor so you can be a cleansed vessel, sanctified and useful for the Master's purposes.

Stop trying to please God through empty works and burnout. Allow the Holy Spirit to transform your heart, alter your outward actions, and show the world the true and living God living inside of you.

Let God Turn It Around — The Story of Joseph

When life throws unexpected challenges your way, it’s easy to feel trapped by your circumstances. You might find yourself asking why you are going through a particular trial or wondering how you can possibly fix it. But what if the very situation meant to break you is actually part of a grander, divine setup?

In this uplifting episode of Touching Hearts and Changing Lives, Pastor Otley Holmes of Crystal Fountain Missionary Baptist Church takes us out of our current anxieties and dives into one of the most powerful narratives of restoration in the Bible: the life of Joseph.

From being a favored son with a coat of many colors to being thrown into a pit, sold into slavery, and wrongfully imprisoned in Egypt, Joseph faced decades of betrayal and isolation. Yet, he never lost his integrity or his trust in God. Pastor Holmes breaks down how God meticulously orchestrated Joseph's trials to bring about an ultimate turning point—not just to elevate Joseph to second-in-command of Egypt, but to preserve the lineage of faith and save a civilization from starvation.

Discover how to stop trying to force your own endings, protect your integrity in the middle of a storm, and give God room to completely reverse your situation as we explore these foundational Scriptures:

  • The Vision and the Betrayal: Revisit where the animosity began in Genesis 37, as Joseph’s God-given dreams stir a murderous jealousy in his brothers, leading them to strip him of his coat and sell him to slave traders.

  • Integrity under Fire: See how Joseph maintained his devotion to God when tempted and wrongfully accused by Potiphar’s wife, as detailed in Genesis 39.

  • The Final Turning Point: Deeply examine the powerful climax of Joseph's journey in Genesis 50. Learn the ultimate truth of verse 20: what the enemy meant for evil, God meant for good, to bring it to pass and save many lives.

  • The Purpose Behind the Pain: Connect Joseph's resilience to the New Testament truth in 2 Corinthians 1, reminding us that God allows us to go through comfort and tribulation so that we can ultimately use our testimony to help someone else.

If you are being observed in your trial right now, remember that it takes one to know one. Your endurance today could be someone else's lifeline tomorrow. Snap out of worry, live more, and let God turn it around!

Core Message: "It's in the Name"

  • Scriptural Focus: The sermon centers on Philippians 2:10–11, which states that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow and every tongue should confess that Jesus is Lord.

  • The Meaning of Biblical Names: Pastor Holmes explains that in ancient times, names carried profound meaning, identity, and character, rather than just being familial or aesthetic choices. The Hebrew word for name (shem) also implies a person's renown or reputation.

  • Pronunciation vs. Meaning: He addresses ongoing theological arguments regarding the "correct" pronunciation of the names of God (such as Yahweh) and Jesus. He notes that ancient Hebrew was written only in consonants, making exact original pronunciations uncertain. Because linguistic rules change over time, he argues that believers should not obsess over exact pronunciation, but focus instead on the identity, character, and divinity behind the name.

  • Divinity and Free Will: He connects the Jewish practice of using Hashem ("The Name") to avoid saying God's holy name directly to the divinity of Christ. Reflecting on the phrase should confess, he notes that God still grants humanity the free will to accept or deny Him, even though the ultimate evidence of His fullness will one day be made completely undeniable.
